Stream it, ifif you enjoy offbeat, low-budget indie comedies where the atmosphere matters more than the logic.

A quirky indie comedy that leans into the absurd and the eccentric rather than genuine mystery. It is a dry, offbeat romp through Los Angeles for viewers who enjoy weird characters and low-stakes investigative chaos.

What it is about

Wiley Roth finds a severed human finger in his kitchen one night. Understandably freaked out, in a search across Los Angeles that brings them in contact with psychics, ineffectual police, crooked taxidermists, mysterious neighbors who might be on drugs, and a nine-fingered woman named Cheryl who might, improbably, end up being the girl of his dreams.

What Careless is like, and who it is for

What it is like to watch

Watching this film feels like a wander through a slightly heightened, eccentric version of Los Angeles. The pace is relaxed, prioritising quirky character interactions over the urgency of its grizzly inciting incident. It maintains a dry, understated tone that avoids the slapstick energy of typical investigative comedies, leaning instead into the awkward and the absurd. The visual style is distinctly indie, capturing a specific mid-2000s aesthetic of cluttered apartments and sunny, strange suburban streets.

Who it is for, and who should skip it

This is a film for viewers who appreciate deadpan humour and the 'loser protagonist' trope found in cult underground cinema. Those seeking a taut mystery or a conventional romance will likely find it frustratingly aimless and slight. The central hook of the severed finger is merely a vehicle for weird encounters rather than a plot to be solved. One caveat is that the film’s low-stakes approach can occasionally border on the lethargic.

The right evening for it

It suits a quiet, low-key evening when you want something strange but undemanding. It is best enjoyed by those who find humour in the mundane and the mildly macabre.
